Visitors of all ages are invited to Amy Sherald: American Sublime. Explore the exhibition then grab a pencil, take a seat, and sketch live models at a live figure drawing session going on throughout the day. Whether a seasoned artist or sketching for the first time, this is your chance to observe, create, and experiment with making portraits.
Amy Sherald’s work is part of a long tradition of American portrait painting. Sherald focuses on Black Americans--a group often left out of art history--and paints everyday people in a way that highlights their inner lives and unique identities. Through her portraits, Sherald explores what it means to be American today. She believes that imagination shapes the way we see the world, and her art invites us to see new possibilities.

The month of June is known as Pride Month, which centers around the LGBTQ+ community and its history. Pride first started as a political march in 1970 one year after the Stonewall Riots. During these riots, the LGBTQ+ community fought back and protested against police who raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City (and 15-min walk from the Whitney). Pride now takes place all over the world and creates space for the LGBTQ+ community to feel safe, welcomed, affirmed, and celebrated.
